Can anyone suggest a good motherboard that would fit a dell 2400?
Answer:
Your only option are other dell mobo's that have the same pinout. This is due to Dell's proprietary motherboard (non standard)
I believe it's a BTX or micro BTX form factor mobo (or some crazy crap like that)
yea go to makebelievestuff.com and grab yourself a c3p0r2d2transylvania6-5000
mmmm. a Dell MB.
You've got two possible scenarios.
It's either proprietary Dell, in which case nothing else will fit...
OR
It's a standard ATX (or mini-ATX) in which case any ATX or mini-ATX board will fit, which means just about all of them.
I would suggest the Dell 8300 (which is a contemporary of the 2400 and 4550).
I think the 8300 board will fit in the 2400 case. It goes anywhere from $15 to over $100 plus shipping ($10-$20) on eBay. It has 4 RAM slots and the AGP slot. (There is a server board for an 8300 so you need to check it )
Of course, the 2400 has a P4 2.4 gHz processor (the ones I've seen. almost bought one but went with the 4550, instead) @ 400 mHz FSB, and the 8300 board is an 800 mHz FSB so you might want a faster (up to a 3.4 gHz P4, socket 478) CPU.
The prices are pretty good since people have been upgrading to socket 775's and socket 775 Duo Cores. A dual core, socket 775 945 (?) Intel processor was just under $100, including the MB (cheap but usually functional MBoard).
The 8300 boards I've bought also use the Intel 875 chipset which is the best 800-family chipset. (Got one in my highly rated ASUS board) I think there are a few boards out there that used the 915 and 925 chipsets, but that was while Intel was just starting up the production on the new socket 775 CPU's.
Best of Luck
