Answer:
Suggest you shop online rather than at store. It is usually cheaper AND you are not stuck with things you may not want or need. I would check several on-line computer stores and compare items, prices, warrantys, etc.
Many REPUTABLE companies have "custom" built order screens where you can pick and choose to get what you want.
I suggest a minimum 4Ghz processor, 1GB RAM and at least 400Mhz FSB MB. I also suggest a minimum 256MB video card rather than using on-board video. Also a minimum 400Watt power supply.
Be sure to get a quality CD/DVD+/-R-RW DL burner. I recommend the Plextor brand for this item. (I have had less trouble with them than with ANY other brand!)
You will note that I do NOT recommend any specific processor, motherboard, etc. That is because they are a matter of opinion as to which is best for what. (I have seen actual fights break out over this!!)
At this time I would NOT recommend Vista as there are too many different devices, (printers, video cards, etc), that do not have "stable" drivers for this OS yet plus they are still chasing "bugs" in the system. For Windows I would use XP Home,SP2, unless you have need for the professional version. For Linux, I make no recommendation since there are so many good ones.
If you like to store things on the system that are bulky like movies, pictures, etc. get as large a hard drive as you can afford, AND put AT LEAST 3 partitons on it; (I use the following settup on several 300GB HD's, 5Gb for "C" for the operating system, 2 to 5 GB for "D" for "transfer" where ALL downloads go until virus checked, 5GB for "E" for ALL applications that do NOT have to load on "C", "F" gets all but about 2-5Gb of what is left for "data", and the rest on "G" for games.)
Note that to store data on "F", you have to use "save as" for most applications, and you have to use "custom" or "change location" to load applications to the "E" drive.
This is because by default EVERYTHING will load on the "C" drive unless you change the location manually.
The advantage here is that the operating system is by itself and can be reloaded or repaired, including "format" of the partition. WITHOUT losing everything else. In fact if you make a backup IMMEDIATELY after loading everything and update it regularly,(stored in a folder called "backups" on "F"), then you will be able to use the "restore" AFTER reloading the OS to bring it back to where it was when you made the last backup. A REAL TIMESAVER!!

So you want a new computer. I see you’re using it primarily as an entertainment PC so I am going to recommend some basic hardware to put in this new PC of yours. Intel has released core 2 duo processors. Core 2 duo processors are the best on the market and are becoming standard on new computers. Core 2 duo is great because it’s really 2 processors working together. Get 1bg of DDR2 RAM to improve your entertainment experience. As for operating system, get vista home premium. If you want XP just remember you’ll upgrade soon or later. You can get a really good computer with all of this hardware for about $600 however I see you also want to do some gaming. Today’s games are extremely demanding and require powerful video cards. Since you’re on a budget, get an Nvidia 7600GT which is a little over $100. Just a little fun fact, Nvidia has the best card on the market, 8800 Ultra which is $800!!! This card has the ability to render graphics that even the PS3 and Xbox 360 can’t rival.
Expect to spend about $900 on your new computer if you plan to add a monitor.
