Do I need both a DVD/RW and a CD/RW?

I'm getting ready to order a computer. I want to be able to burn CD's, and thought I might spend the extra to get a DVD/RW as well. My question is, can you burn CD-format files with a DVD/RW? In simple terms, I want to be able to record music onto a CD and play the CD in my truck. Can I do that with a DVD/RW or do I also need a CD/RW?

Answers:
You can burn CDs with a DVD/RW. The only benefit to having both would be to copy from disc to disc. If you have an interest in burning DVDs, get the DVD/RW for sure; otherwise, if price is a problem, just get the CD/RW and you'll be fine.
A DVD-RW Will do both !!
You only need one or the other; DVD-RW drives can burn CDs as well as DVDs. Go the extra mile and get the DVD/RW drive if you plan on watching DVDs on your computer.
No, you won't be able to burn Cd-format files with a DVD/RW. You have to have a DVD/RW with the CD/RW capability. look for the one that says both.
You do not need both. The DVD/RW will burn CD's as well. However, I have found it very useful to have a CDR installed so that I can copy data from a CD directly if I want. It saves time in that you don't have to copy it to your hard drive first.

Good Luck
Yes, you can burn CD/DVDs from the DVD/RW. just go for the DVD/RW. it is enough.

congrates for the new computer.
Spend an extra couple dollars ($60ish total maybe) and get a dvd/rw & and dvd drive. That will give you two disk bays and allow you to burn from your hard drive to a dvd or cd, and also burn disc-to-disc if you want to straight copy a dvd or cd. Make sure the dvd-rw has duel layer capacity, so you can get 8.5gb onto a dl dvd. the regular dvd drive i've found are more smooth when playing a disc on the computer, and in personal experience i've had less problems that with two recordable bays.
A DVD/RW can do both and much more than a CD/RW

It can burn music on a CD and it can also burn the same on a DVD
Most all DVD Burners can Burn CD's.
You do not need two drives a DVD will support both CDs and DVDs. Good quality DVD drives are cheap now here are some examples:
