I need to add software from a DVD (not a CD) to my Dell computer. Would an external DVD burner do this? Would it connect through the USB port?

u can also get to a desktop which have DVD rom.
share the dvd rom. open the dvd thru the network.
or as u said, get a external dvd rom. connect to your usb and read it as usual
