Will DDR2 RAM chips work within DDR slots?

I own a Compaq Presario laptop with two 256MB PC2100 DDR SODIMM RAM chips, and I'd close to to upgrade to it's maximum capacity of 2GB of RAM.

Can I instead buy 200-pin DDR2 RAM chips for my laptop? Are these DDR2 pieces backwards compatible? The DDR2-SODIMM 200-pin pieces I've found are MUCH cheaper, but I don't know if they're compatible beside my laptop because they are DDR2 and have different (faster) speed specs (PC4200 and faster).

The HP online rep said faster speed RAM chips may not be compatible, and I don't if that's a unchangeable answer or just a suggestion.

Can anyone relieve?

Answer:
To use DDR or DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 200-pin SODIMM slots and a DDR- or DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR or DDR2 SODIMM will not fit
In short, no. Or at smallest I wouldn't try it, I don't think your slots would optamize the RAM if it even fit.
I dont see it working at adjectives and be careful.
No. DDR2 and DDR are different. They use different voltage and different physically. To avoid damages, buy the one your laptop supports.
