Answers:
Your old CD/RW drive is probably hooked to it's own ribbon cable on the secondary IDE controller , and it's jumper pin setting is set to MASTER.

You must set the new cdrom's jumper pin settings to "Slave" and hook it to the same ribbon cable the old cd/rw is hooked to. Depending on the age of your computer, the Master should be plugged into the END connector of the ribbon cable and the Slave plugged into the Middle Ribbon cable connector. (In newer computers this is not an issue).

And I might note..

That if your old cd/rw drive jumper pin setting is set to Cable Select, you will have to set the new cd-rom to Cable select.

Always keep this in mind...

Master - Slave
Cable Select - Cable Select

It's either one or the other.
I am assuming this is the first time you will be doing this. Rather than try to explain it, here is a website with pictures that show how to install a drive. Although you are installing a second CD drive, the tutorial will still apply. Remember you need to set one drive as MASTER and the other one as SLAVE if you connect both to the same cable. Alternatively, you can set both to CSEL and let the cable determine the master and slave.

Good luck and have fun!
First, you need an IDE cable with two connectors. Next, there are jumpers located on the back of the drive. There is usually a guide on the drive that shows you where the jumpers go to make a drive Master, slave or cable select. These are denoted, Mst Slv and CS. Take the drive you want to use for burning and jumper it to slave. The read drive, jumper it to master. I usually place the burning drive on the bottom and the reading drive on the top. It makes it easier to use in the long run. Place the drives in the case and connect the top IDE connector to the top drive and the bottom IDE connector to the bottom drive. (just so you know the red stripe on the IDE cable has to face the Red wire on the power cable). Plug in your power connectors and you are all set. I should mention that you want to do this with the power off and the unit unplugged just to be safe.

Good luck
