Will AGP 16x card work on AGP 4X motherboard?
I have a Kobian PVM255aM motherboard with AGP ver 2.0 and 4x transfer rate. I'm interested in buying 7300 GT Ultra2 graphics card of either XFX or Sparkle. Will this card work properly with my mother board?
Answer:
You are most likely confused. The card you are looking at it probably a PCI express x16 card. There is no such thing as a AGP 16x card. They are two entirely different formats and therefore can not be used together. Look for a card that is capable of AGP 8x/4x. Those cards will work in your PC.
The differences between an AGP 4x slot and AGP 8x slot are very small. Here is an old article showing the differences:

The 7300GT is still not a fast card and will not even be close to saturating the AGP 4x bus. Rest assured that a AGP 8x/4x card will work fine without being severly handicapped contrary to the last posters claims.
no.
Just confirming sdiver's answer. The 8x agp is backward compatable to 4x but it would connect at the slower rate. The 16x pci -express is an entirely slot.
That is not entirely true. Inno3D and Leadtek both make AGP versions of the 7300GT, although, you are most likely to encounter a PCI-E card in your travels.
That being said, you would be severly resistricting the performance of the card putting it in a 4x AGP slot, were you to find an AGP version, though they are, as mentioned, backwards compatable (within the AGP format).
