I just installed a WD Raptor 150gb drive in my computer. Upon spindown it makes a "spindown" noise - normal?

I'm used to normal 7500rpm drives, and have 3 installed. I just bought a new Western Digital Raptor 150gb for my boot disk.

I've had it for about a week, maybe a bit more. When I first got it, it didn't make a noise when I shutdown my computer. But now when I shut it down, it makes an almost like.braking sound (like it's slowing down from a very fast speed, which is obvious, but it's fairly loud and wasn't there when I first got it).

Is this normal? It only makes the noise when I shut down my computer, otherwise it's very quiet.

Answer:
I would have to hear the noise to say for sure, but it is normal for it to make some noise as it spins down.

Basically, while it is spinning at full speed, it creates an air bearing between the spindle and the chassis. Once the spindle slows down past a certain amount, the air cushion collapses and the bearing actually rubs against the chassis. That is what you are hearing.

However, if it sounds like it's grinding at all, or the noise is particularly loud, it could be a sign that something has been damaged.
