Any way to make a computer mouse [one that has the little ball in it] work better when it starts to not work?
Answers:
Take out the trackball, you will see two small black cylinders inside the mouse facing perpendicular to each other. When they get dirty it wreaks havoc with a trackball mouse. So clean those rollers with your finger or with an cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol.
If you still have problems, I reccommend getting an optical mouse, they are more sensetive and have no moving parts besides the wheel and buttons, so they last alot longer. You can get a nice one for around $15 at any department store.
If your mouse still has a ball in it, it is at least five years old. Therefore, any time spent trying to get it to work is time wasted, as the thing is about to break in a different way anyhow. Just get a new mouse.
Get an optical mouse, they are very cheap these days.
If you must, open up the door where the ball is (usually by twisting according to the arrows).
Clean out any debris.
THEN! see the little rollers in there? (usually 3, 2 white and 1 black). Scratch off the **** (gunk, schmutz, crap) with a little screwdriver or something, but don't force it.
Once it is all gone from the rollers, and the cavity is empty of hair and such, it should work much better.
In addition to what The_Hooligan says, there's a third wheel opposite the two main wheels that also gets grungey. Clean all three an you'll feel good about doing something productive without spending any money.
Have you ever taken the little round cover off the bottom and cleaned it out? You probably need to get a q-tip or something and scrape off all the lint and crap from all the little wheels/rollers in there. If it has a light circling around the wheels/rollers, then it's crud that's affecting the motion.

Some of the more expensive mice have a multi year guarantee. Some people claim these hold up better in heavy use.

Yes, clean it. In most ball types the ball is held in by a plastic ring around the ball --if you look closely you'll see arrows showing you which way to turn the ring to open it and let the ball fall out. Clean the ball with alcohol and set it aside. Next look in the hole where the ball was...there are two little rollers in there just under the edge of of the hole. Using a small pen knife scrap lightly at any black dirt to remove it - once all the dirt is gone it will have fallen into the mouse. Hold the mouse hole side down and shake out the dirt. Next wash the rollers of with a little alcohol using a qtip or some such thing. Allow a couple of minutes for the alcohol to dry replace the ball in the hole replace the ring turning it to lock it and your mouse should work like new until it gets dirty again.
Several people have already said this, but I'll say it too.
Just buy an optical mouse. You won't have these problems anymore. It's that friggin' easy. :)
Personally, I like the Microsoft 5-button optical mice. You can get them at Tiger Direct http://tigerdirect.com for $25. I'm sure you can get them cheaper elsewhere.
