DVD ROM not reading disc! Please help!?
Answers:
Have you tried putting something other than a dvd in the drive?
Have you tried putting the dvd in another drive to make sure the dvd itself is not messed up.
If you have its safe to assume the drive may be bad if its not reading anything including cd's. Some may mention drivers but 99% of the time your operating system will pick up the drive and install drivers for it to work.
I dont know what program you had or have on your system to watch dvd's on, but you could also before ruling out the drive is bad, uninstall the program and reinstall it if you have a cd to do so.
go into control panel and then hardware... try to either update the driver or roll back the driver... if it does not apper on the list ... download the driver from the manufacturer.
Go to the start button, and select "My Computer". See if your dvd drive is listed there, and double click it to access the contents.
If that doesn't work, and your dvd drive is just dead, it is very cheap and very simple to replace it. You can get a new dvd drive for like $20 or so I believe.
Then you just need to open your computer case (with the computer unplugged), unhook the old drive, and plug in the new one.
The lens could be dirty, get a lens cleaning kit.
The drive could have died, it happens. Just get a new DVD drive to replace the old one. If you don't know how to do that you can take the PC in to a computer shop and they can do it for you. It's a very easy task, should only take 15minutes max. There are no programs needed to read a disk, the operating system (windows) will do that just fine.
You can try to find a better driver but this rarely helps. As windows OS has a default driver for dvd or cdrw and they work 99% of the time. You DVD rom is probably went bad. They are fairly resonable now. You can get a DVD/RW dual layer recorder for less than $50 now. Your best bet is to purchase a new one and install it they are fairly easy...Thanks
