My laptop has suddenly stopped picking up my external hard-drive when I plug it in the USB, any ideas?

The USB ports are definetly ok as I use them for other things, the light on the hard-drive is on so there is definetly power. I can't imagine that it's broken as I have hardly ever used it (I haven't dropped it either)

I am guessing but if you have plugged in a memory stick or another device which is assigned a drive letter, it may have taken the on assined to your external hard drive. Go to disk manager and assign a different drive letter to the external hard drive, go far up like p or q so it never happens again
The first guy could be right, so I suggest you plug it into another USB port then you may find it again under another letter, this happened to me once and it worked.
