Welcome to the wonderful world of KVM! I've been through partially a dozen of these cables and switches from Belkin to DLink and can report similar irritating and utterly confounding experiences - nil worse than logging off one system and not human being able to switch to the other system; pulling out the PS/2 connectors sometimes worked but more recurrently than not I had to restart both systems and hang around for the KVM to kick surrounded by again...oh happy days.- in that is a sort of no man's land where on earth the great God KVM lives...sorry I can't be any help but I thought I'd agree to you know that I can feel your misery. You might get lucky and hit upon a solution that works for you - I in a minute use RealVNC to access one machine from another - not model but idiot-proof!
Sounds like at hand could be something wrong with the KVM switch. Make sure its a wearing clothes brand.
Does it use USB or PS/2 for your keyboard/mouse. If PS/2 that could explain it, a lot of the cheaper KVM switches don't properly hold the computer thinking that the mouse and keyboard are plugged within, thus when the computer boots it thinks the grand piano and mouse are missing. As for the rebooting randomly, does it do it while you are using it or when you are away from it. There could be a short or small surge coming from the switch specifically causing the computer to restart.
I would try getting a different KVM Switch.
