A picture or two would really help here.
Without a picture I can only guess that it connects by USB, which only connects one way, if you try to plug it in upside down it won't go in, flip the plug over and try plugging it in that way.
if you have plugged your PC network port into the telephone then you have surely destroyed the network card with the 50volts dc that sits on your phone line!i do not see the reason for plugging your PC into the phone in that manner - what are you trying to achieve?
if your PC has an internal modem, the little glass connectors are called rj11 the other end will be a standard telephone plug or a second rj11 if there is a line out on your phone.
there are 4 types of cable for this 2wire straight
2wire crossed
4wire straight and 4wire crossed.
that's the first issue if connecting via dial up modem.
if you are connecting via network, the little glass plug is bigger and is called an rj45 or patch lead from a router or hub to your LAN card.
that is if you want to connect to a local area network or to the net via an adsl [broadband] router - it cannot run directly to the telephone line so unless you have a telephone that is also a router [cool idea but Ive never heard of one] plugging this directly to the phone is going to destroy your LAN card
