Reading cd/dvd hangs my system?

Hey, i'm still having problem with my cd/dvd drive.

I have a dvd/rw and a cdr(2 months old).
I set my dvd/rw as master
and
cdr as slave,

The problem with both, is that when it can read, it runs smoothly,
But sometimes when it doesn't read, my computer hangs.
i tried setting the CDr as master(no dvd drive) and vice-versa.
However, the same problem still persist.

I reformatted my hdd, but the problem still persist too.

This is difficult if i'm installing applications that uses more than one cd
-->after the first disc, the reading of second disc would hang my system and thus i've to reset the power and thus, never get the application installed at all.

What is the problem, is it with my cd/dvd drive, my motherboard or any other part.

How can i solve this problem?

thanks people. will appreciate your answers
