I'm not an expert so these are just some random thoughts that might help. In addition to Seagate you can also check out Western Digital, Maxtor, and LaCie, to name just a few more. This article has several different reviews of several different external hard drives:

As I said, I'm not an expert and I'm sure other people might disagree with me. But I think I'd stay away from the terabyte drives. Everything on that drive (photos, music, videos, whatever) could be lost if the drive crashes. If someone really has that much data that it requires a terabyte of storage, why would you want to risk losing everything? I'd rather have 4 hard drives of 250MB each. One drive for photos, one for music, etc. It also makes backing up a hard drive a lot easier. And it might even be cheaper to buy four smaller drives rather than one large one.
Again, I'm not an expert but I don't think you'll find a built in firewall with an external hard drive. A firewall is a software program or piece of hardware that helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach your computer over the internet. Since an external hard drive can't connect directly to the internet there wouldn't be any need for it to have a firewall of its own.

FireWire is another form of connection between a computer and external devices like cameras, printers, hard drives, etc. It's faster than USB and more products are now incorporating FireWire. It's still not as widespread as USB but it's getting there.
