External Hard Disk Capacity?

Hi, I am just wondering whether can a hard disk capacity be hacked to make it appear as if the storage is bigger than it actually is? For example, if the properties had shown that it is 300GB but in fact, the actual capacity is 100GB or less than that. Is it possible? This is similar to an 8GB MP3/4 player which is hacked for it to appear as 8GB but in fact, it is only 1GB. Please advice. Thanks.

Answer:
Yes, the size is stored in the partition table, and with the right program, or by rewriting the right open source program, you can write the partition table to have the wrong size. (I believe you can do it with fdisk: http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blc... )
If you do this though bad things could happen if the computer or player try to read or write information past the actual size of the disk.
there is not a way with a windows based drive to make it appear larger than it is. only smaller, this is called partitioning. all drives hold slightly less than the advertised sized due to file system structure, and required files for playback wil mp3/4 players.
