Here is a copy of the technical specs for the Dimension 4700 in regards to what the motherboard supports:
Memory
Type
400-MHz (PC2-3200) and 533-MHz (PC2-4300) DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM non-ECC
Memory connectors
four
Memory capacities
128-, 256-, 512-, or 1-GB non-ECC
Minimum memory
128 MB
NOTE: Up to 128 MB of system memory may be allocated to support graphics, depending on system memory size and other factors.
Maximum memory
4 GB
NOTE: See "Addressing Memory With 4-GB Configurations" to verify the amount of memory available to the operating system.
Based on this information, you can use either PC2-3200 or PC2-4300 series DDR2 memory upto a total of 4gigs.
I googled the system to get specs..
based on what I see, it uses pc3200 ddr 1 ram
hope that helps

first off your computer will not take ddr2 memory. it's for newer dual core boards. You need at minimum of ddr pc3200 memory for your computer
Without opening your PC, you can find out w/ CPUZ. Download and install from here:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
I'd check on Dell's website in the specs for your computer.
I'll save you the time and tell you it's DDR2 RAM in there
Link to Dell in sources.
Hope this helps
