I Am Thinking of buying an external hard drive for files and program?

When buying the external drive, i would like to install programs on it, as i have a lot of them! Would it be able to do this, eg a game like Flight Sim X? Would there be any speed changes aswell within the program? Thanks for your help in advance :)

Hello there.

I have some external drives, and let me tell you, don't try to install big FPSes on them, if they use USB1.

You can probably install Flight Sim X, but it may lagg a bit.

I'd reccomend moving all non-game applications and files to the external, and putting games on the hard drive.

Or, if your computer supports SATA, you could hotplug a hard drive into your computer.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
Hi

You may not know that you can store video and music and if you buy a multi media type external case be able to play them via a tv if you wish.
Places like Maplin or aria or ebuyer have a few on sale.
As for programs you could but depending on the drive and operating system and settings, [ like do you have it set for cache or quick removal you my get slower performance. ] All you can do is try it and play with the settings for the best results.

You may as well just buy a new HDD... and throwing it into your computer try 1TB or if your motherboard supports it you could raid a couple 500GB. but connecting an external via usb would be way too slow to run a game
use all files on usb hard drive keep games on main hard drive as games def will slow down try maplins for ext hard drives doing good deals at mo
Hey, I don't know exactly what your situation is, but I would just buy another internal hard drive, as they tend to be cheaper than the external ones. I would also see if you have SATA compatibility, since they transfer data much faster.

If you want the external for the portability or because your case has no room for another HD, you might look into getting an external drive with a firewire connection, as long as your computer supports it.
It would make more sense to keep all programs on your original hard drive and anything else like data files separately.
