External HD partitioning?

Does a external HD have to have a primary partition ? Could I partition the HD into all logical partitions ? Or is the best approach two primary partitions, with the 2nd primary partition containing 2-logical partitions ?
I will use the external drive only for back up storage, and for holding audio, images and video files.
I have never worked with partitions before, and my motive for partitioning the external HD, is to isolate my back up files from the rest of the HD's files.
Feed back will be appreciated !

You should be able to partition this device with the same process that you would do with an internal device in most cases. Though this can also be done with the software supplied by the manufacturer, mostly this is done through disk management.

Disk Management is a tool that is accessible through the Start Menu. In the Start Menu choose RUN and type diskmgmt.msc.

In Disk Management by right-clicking the appropriate device or diagram of the device you can delete or create partitions as you please. Keep note, you need one primary partition to establish the disk before you can proceed to create any extended partitions and assign other drive letters or folder paths. before you can create an extended. You should be able to have up to four primary partitions on a single physical drive, but it is a more common practice to create one physical and create multiple extended and logical drives.
