look at the webcam and find out who makes it. go to the manufactures site and like logitech you go to downloads and you download the driver and software for the cam
go to logetech or whatervers website and download the software
You may try updating your webcam's driver's by downloading them either directly from the manufactures website, or from a reliable third-party site such as driverguide.com and installing them.
If that does not work, you may be running into software conflicts. Software might be found on the manufacture's website but whether or not it is free, I cannot be sure...
If you are wanting to use a USB Webcam to take stationary pictures WITHOUT the Manufacture's software, than you will probably have to keep going the way you are right now, and just make use it as a live-feed webcam for all other purposes.
But again: Try to visit the manufacturer's website and download the proper drivers, as well as any software that model of camera may have.
Look at your webcam. You'll need to determine the manufacturer of it.
