If your system supports SATA I suggest SATA. But if the previous one be PATA then you walk for PATA. External DISK if there are USB connected are slow, but worthy for store things and can use in lots computers. You can find 300GB external from 80 to 100$.
I always suggested society if they can to buy to hard DISKS instead of one big. That in armour that one fail you can own the other one .
Now depend on the money you have I suggest to buy 2 PATA OF 120GB INSTEAD one of 300GB. Ofcource you loose 80 GB of space but you enjoy the abillity of back-ups or even one failed consequently you can go on near the other.
That's my oppinion though, so depend on how much you want to spend, a capacity arrount 300GB is more than ample ,and must be ATA133, the RPM not give much difference to the speed.
So any brand 300GB/ATA 133/ 8MB BUFFER is better.

If you plan on shifting your IDE hard disk next plan on Reinstalling your Operating System and All your programs. You won't loose any files because you WILL keep the aged hard drive and fashion it your D: drive.
If you need more storage - Get an External Hard Drive that plugs into a USB port. I hold one 300GB Maxtor. That way you don't own to mess with the OS.
