Hard Drive installation Problems?

Motherboard - P5GD1-VM
HD - Western Digital WD800 - SATA

When I try to install Windows XP Home Edition on the drive it gets to a point and gives me an error that says I need to run a AV check or CHKDSK/F. It is a new drive nothing on it. Any help would be appreciated

Answer:
When you are installing Windows XP on a SATA drive in you will have to manually load the SATA drivers.
Some motherboards come with SATA driver on a floppy disk or you can copy the drivers from motherboard support CD to a floppy disk. You can also get drivers from WD website.

Then, boot system with Windows XP CD. When the message "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver" shows up, press "F6". Then, press "S" to specify additional device when next screen pops up. Put the driver floppy disk you made in and press enter to continue. Then choose the Serial ATA RAID Controller that you need. After SATA driver loaded and Windows XP can recognize the SATA HDD, you can continue to install Windows XP as usual.

An alternative to this is to create a slipstreamed Windows install CD that has SP2 included.
the best tool is to use a wiin98 for a diagnostic, and it will troubleshoot your problem....
you might just have a bad drive. Even though it is new, its a possibility.
Just because it is a new drive, it doesn't mean it is error free.

When it gives you a chkdsk error, it is an indication that there is something wrong with the hard drive and a repair is required.
Make sure you formate it using NTFS and a FULL format.
It sound like your partition(s) for your drive may not be set up properly. WD has tools that you can download to set up your drive and its partitions properly. I believe your system will boot to CD so I would suggest that you download and burn a bootable CD of the Data Lifeguard tools ver 11.0+ (you will be download a CD image file and your burner software will create the cd for you). Then go to your computer with the new drive and boot to the CD. It will detect the drive and check the partitions on it. If partitions are not available have the utility create and format the partition for you. It's pretty quick.
