Is my RAM faulty?

I installed a new RAM card in my pc this morning, to be specific it's a DDR2 4200 1GB card. However since I put it in Norton keeps going mental and I've had to switch that off and my internet explorer keeps crashing and so have a couple of other programs I've tried to use (i.e. ebay turbo lister). I've looked on the view system information in 'my computer' and it's registering as being there (system total is 3GB) it's the only thing I can thing of that could be causing the problem. I can't see why it would though as I know my motherboard supports up to 4GB of RAm and it's the same speed as the other cards. Any ideas?

Answer:
Every now and again domonic, you will unfortunately purchase a "dud" memory module
through no fault of your own certain modules are just corrupt, this may be due to bad production and manufacturing process,or because a previous user has touched the module incorrectly destroying the modules chips(or some of them)
however why not try using a diagnostic program called "sisoft-sandra lite" from http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir... check the section on memory and motherboard, you may be able to find out why this module is mal-functioning and maybe find a solution
ddr and ddr2 memory is very particular about the way they are placed in their banks, place them in the wrong order or place and the p.c will either not boot or malfunction like yours
i had a similar problem to yours, however i found my problem was to do with mixed speeds of memory,i had 2 x pc3200(kingston hyper memory) and 1 x pc2100(kingston value),i decided that 1gb of pc3200 will be faster than 1.25gb of mixed speed,in theory i would be running a memory speed of pc2100,as the memory allways goes to the lower module speed
when i had the mixed speeds,i installed a nvidia geforce 7600gt,and suffered a few crashes, since i have used just the 2 x pc3200 my computers never run better
use the diagnostic program above and find out the speeds of memory in your p.c,if you have slower modules ,either remove them or if you wish to keep them, place the slower modules in slot 1/2,and the faster in the remaining slots
another method is to try your new memory module in a similar p.c(ask your local p.c shop, they should have a test-bed for trying components on)and check to see if it is defective
other memory diagnostic programs are mem-test(http://www.memtest86.com/),this... is a free download and is a excellent utility for checking your memory
and Windows Memory Diagnostic(http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp)... program tests the Random Access Memory (RAM) on your computer for errors. The diagnostic includes a comprehensive set of memory tests. If you are experiencing problems while running Windows, you can use the diagnostic to determine whether the problems are caused by failing hardware, such as RAM or the memory system of your motherboard. Windows Memory Diagnostic is designed to be easy and fast. On most configurations, you can download the diagnostic, read the documentation, run the test and complete the first test pass in less than 30 minutes.
any more problems let me know
good luck mate!
Remove the memory stick and see if your problems disappear. If they do, returrn the stick and get a new one. If they do not, make sure the memory stick is EXACTLY the same as the motherboard recommends and that you dont need to bank them (install them in pairs).

GL
it could be that your system is set to dual channel and something is conflicting with the ram, check your BIOS settings for anything out of the ordinary
reseat first...
test again..

if still having problems, then move the memory stick to a different memory slot on the Motherboard..
test again..

IF STILL having problems, then pull that stick out all together..

if problem clears when you remove the memory stick, then yes you have a bad stick of memory, if the problem clears when you move it to a different slot, then that memory controller is bad..if you reseat it and it clears up then you just did'nt have the memory seated all the way...
Ask your ewe.
You still may have the wrong ram installed. Go to WWW.kingston.com/ and check out what your PC requires.
try this leave your new ram in and take the other ram

boot your system

see how it runs

then install 1 off the other rams
see how the system runs

and so on then you will be able to see if any of the ram is faulty
by a process of elimination
are your other memory cards DDR2 as well? just thought i'd check, if they all the same then try the solutions what the other peeps have suggested...sorry cant help much more :(
Though the Motherboard says that it supports 4GB. It will not be able to support more than 3 GB. which is the Max Limit.
the issues with Norton and internet explorer may be taken care by reinstalling Norton and by creating a new user account
check your system compability do you have an another sdr ram fixed to your computer then it may start
Use Memtest.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/memtest...

I had a laptop with Windows 2000, when I upgraded to XP it often BSOD with a hardware (IRQL) error, and it was a RAM upgrade I did. Strangely enough, it crashed less often when I didn't use a PS2 mouse!
At first turn off your pc.
To check the ram is not faulty, turn your PC off, take out your existing ram, put the new ram in a slot you were using then boot up your system and see if it runs OK. Then add one more ram and check then the last ram. Sometimes ram plays silly buggers at first, are all the ram matching? Unmatched ram sometimes causes a problem or it could be dodgy and need replacing. Another trick which might work is to reformat the hardrive so that it may recognise all 3 ram on reinstalling the operating system.
Good luck
Andy
