How DVD writer is connected?

Answer:
External DVD writers are usually connected VIA usb. Some may be firewire.

Internal DVD writers are connect over IDE/ATA or SCSI. I've yet to see one that utilizes SATA.
In the new systems everything is color coated, very very easy! Make sure you are not going to break any warranties if you open your tower!
Depends on your writer, some plug into the USB, others to your Firewire, I have seen others connect to the printer port!!
