A home user recently installed a second processor in a windows 2000 server but did not notices any improvment?

What is the most likely cause of the problem?

Answer:
Windows server has what's called a HAL or Hardware Abstraction Layer. This is what tells Windows about the hardware you computer is running. When Windows was first installed on the computer with a single processor, it installed the 1processor HAL. Just installing a second processor doesn't tell windows to automatically update the HAL that is installed. You can read more about adding a second processor on Microsoft's support website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/234558/e...

Two other things can affect your performance as well. One would be the amount of memory. If you have two processors but say only a gig of memory or less obviously that could affect your performance as well.

The other thing would be whatever application you're using may not be able to take full advantage of the second processor. If you're just talking about browsing the website and doing file transfers, a second processor will not help in this regard. Windows can offload some load to the second processor but will be minimal.
It's possible that Windows does not recognize the presence of the second processor. There are ways to force it.
