A external hard disk is not detected by my computer. Wat must be the problem?
Answers:
if its brand new, it may not yet be partitioned or formatted right click my computer then choose manage then disk management / or removable storage I'm not 100% which
check if it shows in there if it does partition and format it then unplug and reinstall it [plug it in]
if it does not show in manager, take it back and have it checked
Like u most likely know it has to do with the drivers or the USB Slot.
My Suggestion is to go to google and type in the following
"Ur External Harddrive name" driver download.
for example
Seagate 150 GB External Hard Drive Driver Download
Then Just Click Through The Top Results And Soon Find The Proper Driver If This Does Not Work Then Either The Hard Drive is Broken, Not Compatible With Your PC Version or Else just won't work because some hardware needs to be first on the driver list which means thet you unplug everything like printers, flashdrives or external wireless adapters and then restart your PC then plug in only the Hard Drive And See What Happens.
I am assuming this is a drive that you're plugging into your USB port? Do you hear the "duh-dong" sound when you plug it in (this is XP's way of letting you know that something is plugged into the USB port)? If not, then here is something either wrong with the USB cable or the external hard drive.
If you do hear the "duh-dong", do you get a yellow balloon message in the lower right corner that tells you a USB drive is plugged in? If so, be patient as XP loads the driver. It also helps if you don't have any programs open. You should see the drive on the My Computer list after a few minutes.
Good luck, email me if you have questions.
Probably your pc is not giving the energy required by the external HD. The current supplied by the usb 2.0 could be too low. You should buy a usb 2.0 cable ( its already includded in most of the portable HD's) with 2 connectors a side and single on the other end, so that you connect the hard disk to one end and the other 2 to the 2 free usb 2.0 ports on the pc, (even when pc switched on). so that the Hard disk recieves the energy from the both pc's usb 2.0 ports, enough to make it work.
So try out...
Dont worry about the drivers. course XP got drivers inside. ( one touch devices are like plug n play s )
