Can I install a pci graphics card on an agp motherboard?

I have a dell dimension 4400 with an agp card. I have open pci slots. Can I remove the agp card and install a regular pci card and just not use the agp slot?

Answer:
Yes... you certainly can.
But there is a little trick to it, so follow this advise closely.
Un-plug your computer and absolutely Un-Plug your monitor.
If you have a dial up modem Un-Plug that also.
Get inside the computer and remove the AGP card.
Then Install the PCI Card.
When that is done hook everything back up and put you signal cable from the monitor to the PCI card.
Now comes the important part
While the computer is re-booting tap the delete key or F10 to get into you Cmos / Bios setup.
Look for the directive the says (Primary Display) it will be of course (AGP) change that to pci.
Save the settings and exit.
Then let the system re-boot install the software for the PCI Card and your all set.
Hope this helps!
Yes but AGP is faster and more efficient than PCI. PCIExpress is the exception to that.
You can but this is a bad idea. The AGP buss is 10 to 20 times faster than the PCI buss. The PCI express X16 buss is 4x faster than AGP 8x.

http://www.directron.com/expressguide.ht...
Common Buses and their Max Bandwidth
PCI 132 MB/s
AGP 4X 1066 MB/s
AGP 8X 2,100 MB/s
PCI Express 16x 4000 [8000]* MB/s

* Note - Since PCI Express is a serial based technology, data can be sent over the bus in two directions at once. Normal PCI is Parallel, and as such all data goes in one direction around the loop. Each 1x lane in PCI Express can transmit in both directions at once. In the table the first number is the bandwidth in one direction and the second number is the combined bandwidth in both directions. Also please note that in PCI Express bandwidth is not shared the same way as in PCI, so there is less congestion on the bus.
Yes you can. Just as you said, remove AGP, install PCI.

But, before you power down to remove the AGP card, uninstall the drivers for it. Then power down, install the PCI, power up and install the PCI drivers.

I actually had a PCI and AGP installed at the same time with the AGP drivers uninstalled, and was using the PCI card graphics. No problems.
