Computer sounds like it is racing when not being used, as soon as I touch the mouse, it quiets down. whats up?

Answers:
Could be a cd in the cdrom drive. I had a pc do the same thing. It's not harmful, just annoying.
Is the fan racing or harddrive?
It may be that you have set (unintentionally) some software to run when the computer is idle, like maybe virus scanning, and so when you touch the mouse and remove the computer from its idle state the process stops. Check what software you have running. Google Desktop may also be indexing while your computer is idle.
Well, do you have a disk or floppy in there that should not be...? Otherwise it may be that sometimes a computer makes that noise when going into a rest mode. and when you touch the mouse the desktop shows up,,,, correct? It is usually a normal function of the computer.
Its the fan kicking on probably at least that's what mine is!
