Sound problems on my computer pls help?
Answer:
Hello -
The first thing you need to verify is if your sound card is working properly (correct drivers in place). To ascertain that, do this (assuming you have Win XP):
1. Right-click My Computer
2. Go to Properties
3. Go to the Hardware tab
4. Click the Device Manager tab
5. This is a list of all hardware in your computer. If all devices are functioning properly, then you shouldn't see any yellow or red marks next to any entry. If you do, then you may need to re-install the appropriate device.
Once you're back at the desktop, and you have ascertained that your sound card is working fine, plug your microphone in to the correct port. Should be the red, or pink port on the back by the sound card. Now some computers have more than one sound card installed. Why? The user might not like the integrated sound card on the motherboard, so sometimes they'll purchase and install a 2nd sound card and use that. The reason I mention that is to be certain that if this situation exists on your computer, make certain you're plugging the microphone in to the correct port. Just plug the microphone cord into the microphone port next to where the speakers are plugged in.
The next thing to check is if the Microphone has been muted in the Sound properties. Double click the Speaker icon down in the start bar. Or right-click it and go to Properties. Essentially, open the Volume controls. From there, you should be able to see all the different levels your sounds are set to, including the microphone. Verify that it's unchecked.
If things are going well, go to Accessories, then Entertainment, and click on Sound Recorder. This is a simple utility that will let you know right off the bat whether or not the Microphone is both recognized and working.
Hope this helps!
