I have installed a memory stick, winows has not detected it.?
not sure if ive installed it properly.
there are 2 slots,
should the memory stick/ram face the same way. ie flat side facing away?
Answers:
With the white clips still closed see if you can pull either end of the stick out. If you can it wasn't seated. Make sure the notchs line up with the slot then work it in until you hear 2 clicks, one from each end locking down. The end clips will usually close themselves when it clicks. Sometimes you can close the clips on ends when the memory isn't seated. Dont try forcing it in take your time. If it still doesn't work pull your original stick out and try the new stick in its slot. If it boots then try adding the old stick in second slot.
Make sure your new stick isn't ECC ram even thou you didn't order it. One time a customer ordered non-ecc and the company was out of it so, as a courtesy, they sent him more expensive ecc ram which, of course, didn't work.
You can only put the stick in one way, it won't allow you to put in wrong way. As for your system not recognising it, do you have Windows XP which should instantly recognise it. If an earlier version, look to see if it has been recognised by opening My Computer, C drive, or through Windows Explorer. If you do have an earlier version of Windows, it may be that your stick needs software. If you have XP, perhaps your stick is faulty because it should auto play.
If you have windows 98 you may need to download the drivers.
