At the risk of sounding completely stupid... What did your instruction manual (paper or CD version) say to do with this 'wire'?

I have a graphics card that needed an additional power source and I connected it via the adapter cable (read 'wire') to one of the spare power connectors coming from the PSU.
What card will help with futuer answers but is the card working...if it is your good to go...if not i dont know without more info on the card and comp

Most of thecards like the Nvidia geforce 7900 for example are plug and play (After adding drivers of course)
Well... what kind of power connection is it?
4Pin Peripheral Connector
or
a smaller 3 pin connector...

If you don't have a spare 4pin peripheral you might have to sacrifice a drive or get a splitter.
If there is only 1 power socket on your graphics card then just 1 will do. If there are 2 sockets then you need to supply it with 2.

For the case of only 1 socket, are you concern of the other end of the power plug? If that's the case, then you can just leave it there. Tied it up so that it doesnt interfere with spinning fans or resting on heat sinks or something.
make sure in the manual that you are not trying to plug the "SLI" cable in somewhere, you only use it for adding a second nvidia card.

If its power, the plug will be open on the card, and the power supply will be the device pluggen in on the card, not the other way around.

cheers
i have that graphic card in my computer.. your best bet it to upgrade your power supply in your computer to a 400 watt one.. the wire that it came with is to hook up power to the graphic card from the power supply. you can either use a pci 6 slot plug or use that wire it came with to convert 2 4 slot plugs into one 6 slot plug to hook it up to the graphic card. . The noise your hearing is most likely your power supply killing its self to power everything up.
hope it helps
hi arron, the geforce 8600gts has a single pci-express 6pin connector, this is the black connector, the other side of the connector(wire)you have is a connection to go into a 4pin molex connector
the 4pin molex connector is the standard type of connector, there should be loads hanging around inside your case, just connect the other end of the wire to a spare 4 pin molex plug, hers a picture(http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2155.htm),... the single end to your card and use one of the other ends to connect to a spare 4pin molex connector
good luck mate!
