What would make a memory ram incompatible with the mother board?

Will voltage be an issue for the ram if you have a good power supply? or is it based on the mother board too?

It depends on the type of slots in the board, the supported bus speed, the supported type of ram and the voltages.
for desktop computers it is generally an issue of speed and voltage.
For example if you put a newer stick of pc133 sdram in a computer that was of pc66 era it would not work and just beep with no harm done.
Some computers needed more elaborate double sided ( low density) ram that was more expensive to make and buy even it was the right speed and i would think voltage.

Laptops are a 100 times more finicky with ram than desktops .
Who knows why ?
