USB hub locks up PC?

If my USB hub is attached to my PC (even beside nothing attached to the hub) when I turn it on the PC fail to start. If I unplug it, it then continues to nouns into windows. This is a legitimate pain. I've tried 2 different make of hub. Any suggestions welcome.

I hold same problem with a card reader.
If you are trying to connect a USB2 hub to a USB1 socket after you are in for a multitude of problems. Also USB hubs hold power directly from the mainboard which can also cause problems.

Best solution is to acquire a PCI card with up to 4 USB2 sockets on it and you will be economically away as long as you are using a fairly modern operating system
Non powered hubs draw power from the workstation,use a hub with an external power supply.i.e. plugged into the D.
