Hooking up an external usb hard drive to xp service pack 2?

I have it all hooked up (power cord and usb cable) but it isn't registering. Is there a hotfix for service pack 2 or is it another problem? The drive is a Seagate FreeAgent 500 and their troubleshooter got me nowhere.

I had this problem. First off the external USB drive was given a drive letter of D:, which was already given to my CD rom. I found this out by Right Clicking on My Computer, Manage, and choosing Disk Management. I then found my Maxtor Drive (I found it cuz it was a 300 gigs and my internal one was only 100) and right clicked on that, and hit Change Drive Letter and Path, I hit the Change button and gave it Drive letter M: (for maxtor). I hit ok, and sure enough my pc found the "new" drive. Also, make sure the drive IS good, plug it in to another pc, to make sure it comes up there, you may have a dud.
XP SP2 should have no problems with USB devices such as this... Check you BIOS settings and ensure USB is enabled and if you have shared memory, increase the amount to get USB2 to work. Too little shared memory has an effect on certain machines.

You also want to test it in OTHER usb ports on your PC or on another PC. Also check the USB cable or try a different one...
