I will always recommend a Mac, as I feel they are infinitely better than PC's. An iMac would be good, although they are kinda expensive, between 1k and 1.5k. The mac experience is worth it for me, however. I have found they can be pretty darn fast, with memory and hard drive upgrades available. The new Photoshop CS3 runs terrifically on them, and you can't beat Aperture for managing your photos. Have fun shopping!
First, what's your budget?
If you are just going to get just the tower, $700 will get you something pretty nice.
Here's what you are going to look for. 2GB DDR2, Core 2 Duo Or AM2 Dual Core Processor(4800 X2 or up). Asus Motherboard is probably your best bet. But Foxconn makes pretty nice Motherboards also. DVDRW(Liteon, Sony, Plextor or others). That's basically it. And + Windows XP Home, it shouldn't cost you more than $700. That should last you for 3-5 Years, Depends on your performance demand,
