HP / Dell / Compaq are the best in the industry right now, you might choose any of these 3... Toshiba is less costlier compared to others but the quality and after sales service is not so good, MAC has the same good old problem that each n everything (spares / accesories / software ...) you'll have to purchase from APPLE, SONY though costliest nothing better than any other brand in the market.

I think Dell is the best, especially since you can customize them to what you want. Prices are good, and they have a great selection to choose from, laptops and desktops alike.
I build my own but if I was to buy from ANY major manufacturer it would be HP hands down. They are the leaders in sales, support and quality products.
All these "loaded" questions today. All these computers are essentially the same. Down in the circuit boards, you will find the exact same components. By saying brand, you are including customer service and support. Dell ranks pretty highly, but not as high as one you neglected. Gateway. They don't have better equipment, just better support.
To shrink your question to the basic level of being the best, the "best" computer is one you can customize yourself to do what you want it to. Nothing more, and nothing less. Maybe even one you build for yourself. Not one bought as a package by these nazi corporations who tell you what you need.
Dell for desktops and Mac or Toshiba for laptops.
if i had to choose.. probably hp/compaq (as they're the same company, they just continue to release systems under the differnt brand names)
otherwise, I'd rather build it myself.. I like having near total control over what I put in my systems, and like the option to upgrade whatever i want, whenever i want to.. and buying a prebuilt system can limit ones upgrade options sometimes...

have the system custom built. if you don't know how, there are many people locally that can build a system for you including local computer companies. a custom built system is much better than the other brands that you are listing.
