Problems after hard disk installation?

I have just installed a fully working hard disk on my computer, so now I have two IDE hard disks. The new hard disk is a slave. The Master / Slave settings are fine, as is the hard disk. But for some reason, my computer is freezing for very brief periods of time, intermittently. By this, I don't mean it freezes completely, but for very brief periods of time, so if i move my mouse, the pointer freezes, then it moves, then freezes, etc. Also, when I try to read or delete a file on the slave drive, I get an error saying that it cannot read from the disk. If I try it a few seconds later, then it reads or deletes fine. Any ideas? I'm using Win XP. Cheers!

Maybe it is corrupt someway try and format it in the same system ie if your master is formatted using ntfs then format the slave with ntfs but if the master is formatted using fat32 then format the slave with fat32
It could be a problem with your computer's internal IDE controller. Try disconnecting the drive and see if the problem persists. If if doesn't, they make actual IDE controller cards that you can plug your extra drive into. They can be found online at TigerDirect.
Did an installation program come with this disk?

Have you formatted this disk - Used FDISK or Windows Disk Management under the Administrative tools in the Control Panel...?

If the disk was formatted elsewhere, your BIOS may be having difficulty reading it properly...

You may also wish to check that it's in DMA mode and not PIO. Go to the Device Manager then Hardware.

Open the branch for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and select the primary and then secondary in turn.

Make sure that DMA is selected in each...

Hoping this helps.
Check whether Event Viewer is recording any errors.

Double click Administrative Tools in Control Panel. Check the System section.
two possible reasons, the first could eb a damaged ide cable/ribbon,i had a similar problem which would freeze my system,it was a simple task of replacing my hard drives i.d.e cable(around £2-50 from any p.c shop) and the problem went!
another reason could be your power supply, hard drives like graphic cards use quite a bit of power as they are allways on,so try a more powerful p.s.u in your p.c,or if your using 2 x optical drives try using just one,and if the problem rectifies itself you know the reason
also have you used the same file system(fat32/ntfs) on both drives, although mixing the two file systems should be fine it can occasionally cause problems
it could even be a faulty mouse or a defective ps2 socket, try using a mouse via the usb port
as with all p.c problems its a case of trial and error, cancel out each idea until you locate the problem
any problem let me know
good luck mate!
Make your new drive the Master.

The ide version on the new drive is higher than the old one and this is stopping the drive working properly.

The disk ID (c:, d:, etc) won't change, cuz you're using Xp.
