Windows xp can't detect my western digital WD2000JD serial ata hard drive?

Answers:
Is this a new drive your installing for the 1st time? If so their are several steps that you need to follow before your drive will be recognized, link with detailed info provided below.

"If you are simply installing a secondary drive, boot into Windows. In Windows 2000 and XP, your new drive will not appear at all in My Computer until you format it. In Windows 9x/ME, it will appear, but you will need to right-click on the new drive and choose "Format" from the menu.

To format the drive in Windows 2000 or XP, right-click on My Computer and go to "Manage". In the window that comes up, click Disk Management in the left pane. Once it loads, you should see an "Initialize Disk" wizard pop up. Partition and format the disk to your liking, but make sure not to convert it to a dynamic disk, as doing so will provide plenty of annoyances down the road."

try running it on the start menu or go to my computer
Make sure that the cables are connected correctly (power and data if they are seperate), make sure that all SATA channels are enabled in the BIOS, make sure that you have the correct drivers loaded for your motherboards' chipset.
Try those but you really need more detail in your question to be able to give a decent answer.
may be you have disabled of automatic detection os ide drives in xp
well.. in anyway.. you could search google to find it... and it's very interesting is it detected in bios? if yes.. than it's just a software problem... maybe other filesystem in it... or..
you just right click on my computer > manage> disk management after you will see everythign...
The BIOS settings are important and if you have more than one hard drive, the jumper pins for Slave/Master are important. For the BIOS try AUTO first.
