Low cost linux desktop computer?
Answers:
you should be able to build one in that price range. but the minimum speck should be
80 gig hdd
512 meg ram
cd/dvd burner
MSI or ASuS mother board with integrated graphic card and sound card
CPU or cheap to buy
as for Linux version go for Ubuntu, it is the best for installation, and the easiest to learn, with lots of support and e-manuals you can download,,
I would suggest using something besides Fedora or Ubuntu. Slackware or Debian would be a better choice. With Slackware and Debian it is easy to ditch heavy weight desktop environments like KDE and Gnome and use light weight stuff like Xfce, IceWM. Slackware and Debian have a higher learning curve but they are easier to "tune" to run on old hardware.
If you go as cheap as you possibly can, you might possibly be able to get the parts to build a computer for ~$300. If you decide to skip a case, and reuse usable parts from an older computer (a power supply, case, heatsink/fan (assuming they're the same size), and the cords for a SATA hard drive) This will allow you to buy OEM processor, and hard drive, and you'll be able to skip over the case/PSU. For that you could do $200-$250. However, it's not really worth the hassle in my opinion. You'd be much better off getting a used computer from ebay that has some version of Linux installed on it (it will be cheaper if Windows isn't on it).
