You could opt for a cheap Sempron 3200+ for a start and just upgrade to dual core later.
it all depends on what you want to use the comp for
if you just want to use the net and basic stuff any deal will do you
if you want to game or use heaps of resource hungry software go for dual core with as much RAM as you can get eg.1GB plus
as for the hard drive bigger is better if you keep songs or movies on your comp. i dont use less than a 250gig hard drive

ok take it easy i ha the same problem but i suggest u get amd dual core x2 sincei have it and it rulez and it has a low profile and on can survive with 1 gagbite of ram
if u want intel get the dual core (dual core meens 2 cpu which is better and faster ) and if u where on bugget then get 1 gb ram 4NOW ONLY when u have the chnace to upgrade 2 2 gb do it
but get a intel 3.0 ghz if u dont no wat that means jsut tell him
