How do I fix my computer's cd-rom drive?

Okay, every time I try to put a CD-ROM into my computer, it doesn't load.

I have a emachines computer with Windows XP. I've had it about a year.

Answers:
burn it!

or take it to the geeks before they run out of business!

mine did!
What do you mean it doesn't load? Add more detail.

In other words, are you saying you place it in the cd-rom drive, and it doesn't automatically run? If so then you've probably just opted for it to not automatically run.

Have you gone to "My Computer" and selcted the drive (usually D:/) and see if you can open up the program on the CD that way? Or is the computer not recognizing there being a CD at all?
reinstall driver
if that's not it have u ever been over seas ?
just go to your computer store and let the computer technician do all the jobs. it would be surely fixed.
Does the cdrom drive show up under MyComputer ?

If so, go to MyComputer icon on your desktop or access it from the Start menu. Right click on it with your mouse, chose properties, then Hardware (tab) and Click the Device Manager button.

Scroll the list for DVD/CD Rom and expand the topic open so you can see the name of the cdrom. Do you see any yellow ! marks or a red circle with a line through it over the name of the CD Rom drive ?

Highlight the cdrom with your mouse and right click and chose properties. Are there any errors listed, does it say it's operational ?

You could also just highlight the cdrom with the mouse, right click on it and chose "Uninstall" and restart windows. Windows should re-locate it and load the correct driver. If in fact the cdrom is physically damaged, it may not reload.
just buy a new drive and put it in
they are only about $20-$30
all you have to do to install it is make sure you are grounded you can do this by getting any wire
and 1. striping the plastic off the out side( about 6 inch of one end and taking about 1 off the other)
2. tie the wire around your wrist ( 6 inch end make sure metal touches skin)
3. loosen screw on any light switch plate
4. tighten screw on 1 inch end of wire

ok now your grounded this will prevent you form destroying the rest of your computer components with static electricity

now to install your drive take off the removeable side of your computer

(there is usually 2 screws in the back attached to the side and a latch on the top or bottom)

once your in make sure the computer is off and unplugged9 unplugging very important) i don't need you getting shocked cause of me

unlatch/ unscrew old cd drive

undo plugs in back of cd drive

push cd drive out front of pc

push new cd drive in front of pc

relatch/ rescrew cd drive back in

reattach cables in back in the same way you took them off there is no way to get it wrong if you dont force them but to be sure always know the way you got them off

re attach the side and your done
The most common problem is dust on the lens of the laser pickup.get a cleaning disc and use it. You can find them at drugstores etc. If that doesn't work then the pickup is probably bad and it's time to throw that drive away and get another one.
