Amd sempron?
Answers:
the amd semprom is a socket 939 processor which is the older standard of all amd processors, however although most of the dual core amd processors are now coming in socket am2,there are some still made in socket 939 so your in luck
the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz (http://www.aria.co.uk/products/component... your budget choice, this is a solid performer and a great processor if money is tight,it may not be dual core but its a relaible processor and wont let you down
for a higher range processor the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ 2.20GHz (939)(http://www.aria.co.uk/products/component... a great processor, this is a dual core model with some great power,2.2ghz clock speed which equates to a p.c working speed of around 4.2ghz,also this is manufactured using the 90nm(nanometer) process which means it can reach higher clock speeds using lower power, which also means its great for "overclocking"
the above processor is probally one of the best you are going to get in the socket 939 range however its a powerful model, and although tis not as fast as the core 2 duos, its not far off
the only other option is to completely repalce your current motherboard, but trust me,you dont want to do that, its not just a new motherboard and processor, its also new memory and if your using agp at the moment, and the new board uses pci-express,then its a new graphics card aswell, for all that you may as well go the whole hog and buy a new p.c
any problems let me know
good luck mate!
AMD athlon x2, they are cheap and speedy and it will be a huge difference from the sempron
u should find a technician to do the job of the upgrading, becuz u most know if certain cpu's are compatible wif the motherboard , the best thing i would recomend is find out what chipset your using on the motherboard and find out what cpus work best wif that chipset, cause its basically the chipset that determines the cpu
Most Sempron were/are socket A motherboards although a few crossed over to AMD64s but both motherboards are redundant now.
You will have to replace your motherboard and CPU. Be aware however as you will almost certainly have ATA hard drives (wide ribbon cable) and 184 pin memory so choose your motherboard carefully so it is compatible with your present hardware. If you have a Graphics card it will probably by an AGP one and most mainboards now come with PCI express slots which are better but it will mean in investing in a new graphics card as well.
Also check the case connections to the motherboard, if they are single terminal connections then no problem but if they are solid multi-plugs then they may well not just plug in to a new motherboard.
Sorry to be such a downer but research will play serious dividends in the long run but at least it means you have the choice of going down the AMD or Intel routes and if you get your research right it doesn't have to cost a fortune.
