How bad did I break my other computer?

I recently recieved an older computer from my mother, and I had the intention of upgrading it, so I opened it up to check out the hard-drive and ram, and all that, but when I closed it back up it stopped working completely, now I get a combination of beeps 2 slow 1fast 3slow, and it's a Dell optiplex 240...my mom thinks I fried the motherboard because I didn't ground myself by touching metal, but I hope not, can anyone decipher the beeps? Is there any hope?

Computer Beep Codes

When errors occur during a boot routine that cannot be reported on the monitor, your computer may emit a series of beeps that identify the problem. The beep code is a pattern of sounds: for example, one beep, followed by a second beep, and then a burst of three beeps (code 1-1-3) means that the computer was unable to read the data in nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM). This information is invaluable to the Dell support staff if you need to call for technical assistance.

When a beep code is emitted, write it down on a copy of the Diagnostics Checklist found in "Getting Help," and then look it up in "Computer Beep Codes." If you are unable to resolve the problem by looking up the meaning of the beep code, use the Dell Diagnostics to identify a more serious cause. If you are still unable to resolve the problem, see "Getting Help" for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.

good question tell me how it turns out...
first figure out what kind of BIOS your computer has.
than google the BIOS maker with the words "post beep codes" and it should tell you. sounds to me like bad RAM or a Video card error.
You may have fried the RAM chips.
BUT....
I doubt it ;-)

I think the beeps are a warning that the case is not closed properly after you opened it.
I can remember some older cases that if they were opened, a ground (or something) button would extend out to leave it ungrounded during maintenance on the inside.

Any buttons that seem to be near the casing on the inside should again be depressed when closing the unit.

I solved it by taping down such buttons, (it was an old Compaq).

This can happen when the unit is again closed, the grounding button is not properly seated.

(I think it was the manufacturers way of keeping us nosy jerks out and force us to bring it to an authorized shop where they could charge us an arm and a leg just to open it, (you know, about $100.00 a second ;-).
That usually means a problem with the memory. Dont know what "checking out" consists of but if you pulled them out and put them back in make sure you didn't put them in upside down(althou they have grooves that align with the slot on some boards you can actually put it in upside down and lock them down!) Hopefully you didn't just ram them in hard flexing and breaking something on the board. If you didn't touch the metal part of case and touched the ram you may have fried it.
After you first touch the case see if you can pull ram out of the slot without opening the clips on ends. If you can open the clips then push it back in gently with your thumb on one end fingers on other, You should hear a click from end of ram when it is properly seated. Hopefully you didn't have any power hooked up.
If you dont know what you're doing do not go into a perfectly fine running computer's case to "check things out"
