Hard Drive Restoration?

I have a computer with an 80Gb hard drive and Windows 98 on it. I never use it. It possibly has a couple files on it. How do i completely wipe out all of the information on it, including windows 98, so that i can put it into my newer computer and install windows XP on it? Please help.

Go to this website which will explain to you in detail on how to do it, because Windows 98 is FAT32 you'll have to format to NTSF:

Hope this helps:))
format you hard drive.. use your BIOS to boot your PC from your winXP cd..
You don't really have to worry about it.

When you get ready to install the WindowsXP, turn on your computer, put in the WindowsXP installation disk.

Turn the computer off.

Reboot.

You will be prompted to click any key to boot from CD. Hit any key.

You'll then have the opportunity to do a clean install of WindowsXP which includes formatting the drive (wiping it clean).

Make sure when you are asked that you format the drive with NTFS--very important.
Use your win 98 to make a bootable floppy

Do this by inserting a floppy, choosing to format, and selecting the option to make a win98 boot disk.

Restart that system and boot from that disk. Then type "format c:" at the command prompt.

When you do the WinXP install you will be able to re-partition and re-format the disk however you like. (you could just skip the bootable floppy step and do it this way)
Reformat that Hard Drive. In all honesty, you could leave it as is, hook it up in your new computer as the slave drive (setting the jumper to slave on the back) and either take information you need off of it, or format it through WinXP and change the filing system from FAT or FAT32 to NTFS. Then you should be able to use it as just another drive in your computer as normal. Just make sure to format it completely (the long version) to make sure that you get everything off of it. Depending on the drive, you may have to get a driver for it from the manufacturer's website or another website, but usually not seeing as XP has most of the drivers pre-installed for you.

If it is a new build and you do not have a hard drive in your new computer, then you can format it in the old one (Help can show you how) and then install it in the new one and boot from the Windows CD (which is usually automatic when the Windows CD is in the CD drive at start-up.
Really easy just connect the HD into the new computer, start up the computer and you will see something like press ESC for boot order or like F10 for boot order then insert the xp disk and select boot from disk and fallow the instruction, and you are set
Simply use your windows xp CD to do everything for you. Put your xp cd into the cdrom, reboot your computer and follow the onscreen instructions to boot from CD. I don't remember the exact steps, but select install xp (it will format the hardrive at the same time). When it askes you what format you want your harddrive to be, pick NTFS, unless you have other preferences. Everything else is pretty simple, just follow the onscreen instructions.

note: If you have trouble booting from CD rom (it goes to windows normally without reading the cd rom), try rebooting your system, press and hold "delete" key. This will take you to BIOS. Once there, search around until you see something along the lines of "Bootable drive", make sure you select primary boot drive as D: or E: (whatever your CD ROM drive is). Save and exit.
restart your computer and enter the BIOS setup. Go to boot priority and select the CD/DVD drive as the only boot device.
Save the settings and exit.

Place your XP cd into your DVD drive and restart your computer. The computer will now boot from the disc. Select install XP and continue to delect current partition(s). Once partitions deleted and drive reformated, continue the installation process and your are done.

enjoy your computer.
so, what you like is to install a new operating system on your pc from win98 to winxp. backup first important files to your diskette, cd or flash drive.

if you want to wipe all information from your hard drive just restart your pc from a windows xp installer in your cd rom.
If your pc doesn't boot from your cd, check first in the bios setting if the cd rom drive is your first boot priorty and restart again your pc. once your computer had read the winxp installer after restarting the pc just press any key to boot from cd then follow the on-screen instructions.

if you are ask to delete a partition, delete it and just create a new partition. and be sure to format your drive using NTFS.

if your hard disk is dead and you want to recover it. and the problem continues even if you had formatted it. you can use zerofill wherein it erases all data of your hard disk you can download it from the manufacturers website.
