My computer's virtual memory is low, how do i delete items to make the system faster??
Answers:
All the answers are good. But if you really want your computer to move faster you should update the memory. If you only have 128 meg's of memory consider adding another memory card if possible for a total of 256. You will notice how much better your machine will run.
STEPS:
1.uninstall unnecessary programs
2.clean disk
3.defragmentation
back up any pics, music, documents you dont need alot to dvd or external drive then right click on them and hit delete.
As stated, go to control panel - add/remove programs and remove any unneeded programs.
Buy a larger hard drive
I had the same thing happen to me. Go to Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs, figure out which programs you no longer use or need, usually it will tell you when the last time you used the program. Then do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.
get this, works great and it's free:
You probably have very low system RAM resources so the harddrive is being used to store parts of the program using it as a form of virtual memory. You need to free up your harddrive space. In windows explorer, go to my computer and then on c drive, right hand mouse click, then go to properties, you should see see 'disk cleanup'. Run this applet, and when it says do you want to clean up the following files, say yes. Once this is done (it takes several minutes) go and defrag the harddrive. Programs => accessories => system tools => disk defragment.
The best solution is to add another 1 Gb of system RAM to your pc.
'virtual memory' is space being used on the hard drive by the CPU to perform calculations because physical ram (random access memory) is running low. You have three choices. Increase the amount of hard disk space allocated to virtual memory (the paging file in windows), add more physical memory to the motherboard or don't run more than two or three programs at any one time. Internet Explorer, for example, uses almost 6Mb of physical ram. If you have only 256Mb of physical ram, by the time XP loads up you may have only 40Mb of physical ram left to run programs. If you're one who likes to open many instances of IE, than 3 openings of IE is already using 18Mb of ram and you only have 22Mb left. At that level XP considers itself very low on physical ram and starts using the hard drive (the paging file) to do its calculations. When this happens the computer runs slower than frozen molasses.
assuming XP Home...
1. best to add more physical memory so it needs to 'swap out' programs' less often
2. uninstall infrequently used 'stuff'
3.dont run so many windows/processes at a time... things like DB server programs (Oracle/SQL server) may be set to be started manual rather than auto on AdminTools->Services tab on startup
4. use Control panel->System and adjust upward the current and max values for the system swap file size
5. SOME of the Registry 'cleanup' tools work pretty well, research them and BACKUP current registry before trying them!! also have access to a PC guru to help recover if anything fouls up!
1- Tools - delete browser history-delete all categories except password
2- Tools - manage add on - disable and enable unused programs
3- Start - all programs - set programs access an default- delete one by one programs that you don't use and they are high MB (re-start your computer after each delete).
4- delete any anti virus and anti spy or error detectors
5- install yahoo Internet security (is include anti spy, anti virus, pop up blocker, mail protection ,in one program )
5- scan for virus and delete it if is register in program default
6-check your computer by manufacture support system
7- Control panel - maintenance and performance - free up space in hard disk- clean up disk
Here is what happening when you have a warning sign showing " virtual memory is low warning". Your computer uses physical memory, aka RAM, and virtual memory. Virtual memory is used to simulate more RAM when your computer is reaching its maximum CPU and RAM usage. It very similar to a bucket filling up with water. If your CPU needs water you can bring this resources to it. But your bucket size is limited. The more programs you use and disk space the more water is needed. But you can only deliver the set amount of water because your bucket size is limited. The bucket is your RAM. However, you can use a spare bucket to quickly to help meet the demand. The virtual memory is that spare bucket.
You can change your virtual memory by altering amount of free resources for your computer to use for it, in a sense making the spare bucket bigger. Virtual memory uses free space as a resource. So you can change the the amount free space reserved for the Virtual memory. This link will show you how to clean up your computer. The rest of this answer will deal with your virtual memory.

When you get to the Virtual Memory menu select the Custom Size check box. Then choose the initial size and the max size. Depending on how much free space you have you can choose what that amount of free space you want. If you are still confused the link below has a visual step by step instructions.
1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
3.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
4.Under Virtual memory, click Change.
5.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change. In most computers its C:
6.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click to Custom size check box. You can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size.
7.Click Set
Hot tip: Keep the initial and maximum size the same to cut down on your CPU access. This will stop your CPU from constantly change your Virtual memory paging size. Also set the size 1.5 times higher than your physical memory.
Hope this helps!
to speed up computer
1]click start and run..type temp and click OK
delete all the files in teh folder by clicking on edit and select all...if all files are not able to delete try delete some files at a time
2]click start and run..type prefetch and click OK
delete all the files in teh folder by clicking on edit and select all...if all files are not able to delete try delete some files at a time
3]click start and run..type regedit and click OK
follow this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ and delete Browser Helper Objects and also delete Compressed old files under VolumeCaches
4]to increase virtual memory do the following
1] right click on my computer and click on properties
2]click on advanced tab
3]click on settings under performance section
4]click advanced options on performance options window
5]click change
6]click custom size and add twice the amount of memory u hve in intial size and 3 times the amount of physical memory in maximum size
7]click set and the click OK
thats it!!
e.g if you hve 512mb ram intial size 1024 and max size 1536
TO KNOW HOW MUCH MEMORY that is RAM on your system:
right click on my computer and click properties andyou fing the amount of RAM thats your physical memory
5]click start and run..type msconfig and click OK
under startup tab click disable all and then click apply and close...resatrt the computer.
see the difference
