I have a hard drive that needs to be reformatted how do I do it?

It was formatted and has window xp on it but something went wrong with it so I need to know how to fix it.

Answers:
It just set the cd-rom as first boot priority, get the win xp cd and follow the instructions.

All you need to do is to pop in your bootable windows xp cd. Boot from it and reinstall. On reinstallation choose complete formatting of the hard disk. The installation process itself will do the job for you.
get any data you need off it 1st!
This depends on the severity of your problem. If you cannot access the computer at all, here are some options:

1) Get another computer to connect the drive to, boot to Windows, open "My Computer", right-click on the letter of the drive in question (Be sure you know which one it is!), and select "Format" from the menu.

2) If you don't have access to another computer and have a floppy drive, you can get a boot floppy from a computer running Windows 98 or download one from the Internet. Insert the boot floppy. You should get to a command prompt (just text on the monitor). It will look something like this:

A:\>

Right there, type FDISK

You should get a format menu. You might want to read some detailed instructions from the Net on how to proceed further unless you can figure out the menu. Basically, you are going to want to DELETE PARTITION on the drive in question, then RECREATE PARTITION, the proceed to FORMAT.
