Why Intel core 2 DUO ?
Answers:
Because GHz do not matter!
P4's are dinosaurs and are not worth anything.
Even in the old P4 days, a 1.8GHz AMD Athlon64 was faster than a 2.8GHz P4.
It's all about how many instructions the CPU can compute per clock cycle.
A 1.8ghz Core 2 is more powerfull than a 5ghz P4.
You can build a seriously fast gaming PC for $800 through newgg.com.
$76 - Penitum e2140 (uses the Core 2 chip design)
$40 - 120mm heatsink / fan for the CPU, lets you overclock from the stock 1.6ghz to 2.8ghz+
$130 - Gigabyte P35 motherboard (upgradeable to Quad core)
$75 - 2gb DDR2-800 RAM
$250 - Nvidia 8800GTS 320mb video card
$44 - Cooler Master Centurion case
$80 - 320gb Seagate SATA hard disk
$85 - 500watt+ FSP, OCZ, Hyper, etc. level power supply
$30 - DVD burner
The above will play any game at MAX settings.
It's very easy to put a PC together, I mean do you really think the people on the assembly lines at Dell/HP warehouses are skilled?
There are plenty of instructional videos on youtube.com and great help forums at anandtech.com and tomshardware.com.
the idea is instead of one brain to Analise your commands, new PC have 2. (dual Core). as the saying goes 2 heads are better than one.
P4 rated clock speed is comparatively higher than Core series in terms of processing power- a 2 gHz Core 2 would kill "old P4s" there still are P4s that are quite powerful but they are expensive.
There are different versions of the core 2 duo. You picked the bottom of the barrel. Your p4 maybe better. It is gaining popularity because of the dual processors on one chip. I have the same processor you have on my desktop. My wife has the core 2 duo on her newer laptop. She hates having to use the desktop because the laptop speeds are a lot better. Now if you were to compare your P4 with the same ghz Core 2 duo, there would be no comparison. The core 2 duo out does it every time. I am actually going to get a new desktop, so my wife quits making fun of my slow computer. LOL
Because its faster than your p 4 3.0ghz

Simply put, the Core 2 Duo is much more efficient than P4's, PD's, etc... Ending with the Pentium-D, Intel began to focus on making more efficient processors. While the clock speed (GHz) of the processor may fall, the amount of work done per cycle increases.
The Core 2 Duo is currently available in speeds of at least 3.0GHz (model E6850).
To cite tomshardware: LAME encoder test:
2.8Ghz P4 520: 5:05
Core 2 Duo @ 2.13Ghz: 3:10
P4: 834 in 3DMark 06
2 Duo: 1892 in 3dmark06
PCMark 05/CPU P4: 3522
Core 2 Duo: 5489
They are simply more efficient and two cores beats one every day of the week.
LOOK at the performance charts below.
A core 2 Duo 1.8 Performance index is 1.54
A P4 3GHz Performance index is 4.36
4.36/1.54 =2.83
A P4 3GHz takes 2.83 times as long to do a task as a core 2 Duo 1.8GHz
