AMD or INTEL?

Which processor is better? I plan to use it for web surfing, videos, some games, amd minor programs (nothing to extensive). I want the pc to be under 500 dollars.

(has any one heard of the amd's burning up?)

Answers:
Intel is generally considered to be the better processor by people in the IT industry.

While it is true that AMD processors used to have their problems with overheating and other operational limitations in the early days of the company, most of those flaws have been corrected now and the processor is generally problem free.

However, Intel processors usually process instructions faster due to their Hyper-Threading technology and Dual-Core processing whcih means that they process instructions on dual channels at the same time to give you twice the speed of a normal CPU. Not to mention that Intel is the more popular and are the more well known CPU with a longer proven track record. Also, most PCs usually have Intel chips in them, including Dell computers, Hewlett Packards, and MacBook pros.

Therefore, if you have the choice between to comparable computers of the same or similar prices, most professional and home computers users would select the computer with the Intel CPU over the AMD.

However, from what it sounds like you are going to be using the computer for your focus should probably be which computer is more affordable and practical for you to buy instead of which processor is best.

Most home users never even notice the difference or utilize the CPU to its fullest extent.

Good luck with your research and I'm sure you will be fine whatever you decide.
AMD is generally cheaper. It would be better suited for a PC under 500 bucks.
Intel but AMD is more 'cost effective'.
AMD all the way. Intel sucks...seriously. AMD will have quadcore and it will be the best processor eveerrrr. Intel has nothing, it's going nowhere. AMD is also better when it comes to games, and surfing the net. But you also have to have a good video card, and good RAM at least 1GB. I haven't heard of AMD's burning up...yet. Have fun!
i've heard of both of them burning up.. all were caused when the fans went out and the noobs didn't have a auto shutdown set up if the processor over heats. For a really cheap one that will work ok the lower AMDs are good. But for a duel core your going to have to spend the cash. Quad cores are pretty pointless unless you wanna be running lots of major programs at once. They both have their ups and downs but for a better buy go AMD.
intel better.
the amd wil be best for gaming and fun stuff, the best to get is the amd 67 athlon x2! and intel will be good for video and internet it can be trusted more and is better the amd in gernal things like school etc. is you r a gamer go all amd! i fyou are any thing else/old go for the intel!
By looking at your criteria, i say you go for AMD.

if you want to do common pc use (internet, movies) - it makes no difference

for servers/programming/3D modelling etc - go Intel

for gaming - go AMD (cheaper so more $ for the videocard and other components and slightly faster for gaming)

They both have dual cores, they both have quad cores, and they're both very fast atm.

AMD gets a little hotter, Intel stays a little cooler.

And don't get yourself fooled by things like "Intel sucks" or "AMD is slower" - they are both very good processors.

Choice just depends on what you want to do with it

(AMD and Intel burning up is possible, but only with a broken cooling system, or, with overclocked processors)
AMD. No question. I read too many articles about AMD vs Intel to change my mind on this. Heres one:

And a whole list of them here This site appears to do nothing else but follow the War between AMD and Intel: AMD with its Coalition of the Nerds and Intel with its axis of Dell.

Kidding =D

As for overheating: either chipset has built-in failsafes that will immediately kill your computer's power supply in the event that the Processor's temperatur gauge reaches a certain critical level (around 80oC)
Older chips May have overheated donkey years ago or when people overclock them beyond their out-of-box settings.its nothing you have to worry about.
