My PC is 5+ years old and has recently started slowing down opening a page?

I am sure I don't have any "bugs", etc as I have all the necessary programs to keep me reasonably clean. I have just had the box open and done a thorough clean in the hope it was dust accumulation. No such luck, the extreme slowness remains. It can take 15 to 20 seconds or longer to open a window. At times in an email if I click a link the screen freezes and "not responding" appears. Sometimes I do this repeatdely before success opening the page. As an older member of the computing world there are many things I do not yet understand about computers and any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. The reason I mention the age of my PC is because I fear age/component failure may be my problem? Highlands

Hey,
sorry to tell you the bad news but 5 years is definetly getting on for a Pc and it's just the fact that the softwareis too much for the hardware and it can't handle all those processes at once. There isn't really much you can do and I really would advise investing in a new computer, the difference is amazing!
Best of luck :)
well.. i have a Dell system, and my system is almost 4 years old. I just Re-Install my operating system every year, to keep it fresh and new. I just did it recently, a month ago. And it's running as it's brand new.
Technology is increasing fast and I think its about that time for a new pc. They are cheap these days though.

If thats out of the question try reformatting it, which means installing the operating system over again making it brand new. Make sure to back up your data first though!!

Any computer shop can do this
i would think that you computer is getting to old to keep up any more there is not a lot that i can do becuase old tech to make it run faster again has stoped beening made.
all i can recomend is as a last effort is to format and reinstall, it might be too late, componats in you computer will be come old and worn out like humans everything must die.

mabey it is time to go and get a new shiny fast pc
Have you tried defragmenting your hard drive? If not, got to:

Start Button->All Programs->Acessories->Disk Defragmenter.

If that doesn't work, then I would take it to a computer repair shop, and have them reformat it for you. Basically, they'll wipe the hard drive clean, and re-install Windows for you from scratch.

Just a friendly reminder if you have this done though: cack up all files, music, etc you want to keep off of your computer before they do it. Because a reformat will wipe everything.

Good luck, and I hope this helped. :)
My computer is pretty old also. You can go to spybot.com to download a free, reliable spyware killer that will help speed up your computer. You can also go to start, programs, accesories, then tools and it will say disk defragmentor click on that then defragment your drive. This re arranges files on your computer so it can run faster.

I find these simple things along with cleaning the insides like you said is good enough to keep my system running.
Check how much hard drive space u have left.If u have ,like
7 GB left tht cud b the problem.I'd advise u 2 get a nu computer though. If u still want to hold on to it,try deleting unnessesary games and programs..as they can slow a comp down.U can also buy RAM(random acsess memory)which will speed things up.tc
what Operating System do you have? Try defragmenting the hard drive through your operating system(operating system is software that allows the user to communicate with the computer)
Maybe its time to get new computer ie new CPU(Central Processing Unit) like Core 2 Duo, motherboard(main circuit board that all internal components connect to), get 1GB of Ram.(Memory is a storage area used to hold data.)
If you want to learn more about computers do a Beginners Course in Computers or look at Computer Magazines from library. Join a Computer Club there are people who know heaps about computers.
