I own a Hp I just switched from gateway. It came with vista, but I have the gateway windows Xp can install it.
Answers:
if the gateway xp is a windows installation disk yes ... if its a restoration disk it will not work ..
it will work just make sure to use the code on the side of your old PC
HP is a pain to work with. I recently tried to do this, but HP uses parts that are made only for HP. This means only HP provides the drivers and they will not give you XP drivers.
HP is the worst for support, and downgrading it they will not help. You can try and reload it, but almost guarantee it won't work properly. Dell is much better at allowing you to do it.
Well the answer to that is no. You do not have a license for XP on your HP machine, the OEM version of XP, or Vista for that matter must stay with the machine that it came with. You can go and purchase a copy of Windows XP, and install it on the HP Machine, as that copy will have its own license.
You can use the restore/recovery disks from the gateway, but why would you want to DOWNgrade your os ?? most of the programs in the next 7 years (till windows 7 comes out) will be vista centered and allmost all programs work with vista now
If your XP CD is a regular copy of Windows, no problem. If it's a Gateway OEM CD, it may be "keyed" to only work on Gateway computers. I know the HP/Compaq and Dell CDs will only work on their computers, but I'm not sure about Gateway.
I'd suggest, create a new partition (depending on your need), install windows Xp in new partition and have dual operating system.
(u can find more info regarding installing dual operating systems -with vista on web )
If you have a Windows XP CD from other source and if it is a single license copy already used on previous system (Generally that's the case) then it won't work with your new Hp Notebook.
If it's a windows Installation disk for XP then sure. I'm not sure the serial key will work with your new PC if it's already register to the old PC. Mostlike not. You should it bought another Gateway, they are rated number 1 right now over dell and hp. They give you double ram and double disk space than a hp or dell for the same or less of a price. with a warranty and great customer service. You can even had choosen to get with xp or vista at no extra charge.
You can try but it will most likely be difficult. Most OS disk that are included by a PC Vendor are customized and are only intended to work on the PC it came with. Before you do it make sure you can Reinstall Vista if anything goes wrong. If you are able to get the install to work you should run windows update immediately and then pull down all the drivers from HP for the model you purchased.
you see if the xp cd is made by gateway for the gateway computer then chances are it may not work. However if you are able to get your hand on a xp retail cd that you can install on any computer not limited to gateway it will work. The hp websites has all the driver that you would need to make some of its hardware work. So once you have installed the xp on the hp computer you can go to the website and download the drivers for its hardwares. You would however download the drivers first and then burn it in a cd because you may need a deiver for the eithernet card to get on the internet in the first place.
